HR INNOVATION

Nominees Name:       George Haddad &
                             Sales Analytics Team

Nominees Company:    Hewlett-Packard
Number of Employees: 300,000
Reasons:            Aligning HR to Business Strategy.
One way to determine if HR has established a truly consultative and value-added role to the business is to gauge how much of an impact HR initiatives have on business strategies. Within HP’s Technology Systems Group (TSG), the business HR sales team led by George Haddad has demonstrated their ability to support human capital decisions through the creation of an innovative Sales Analytics tool.

The TSG Sales organization within HP continuously looks for ways to enter into new markets, grow market share in targeted industries, and improve account investment programs around the globe. As part of the overall Sales transformation initiative, the HR Sales leadership team developed an Analytics tool that integrated HR data, financials, and compensation. For the first time, this analytics tool gave leaders a more holistic view into how human capital decisions impact profit and loss. The tool has been used to help develop key sales strategies for review and decision making by senior management within HP TSG.

Increasing HR Efficiency
In addition to aligning HR to business strategy, the Sales Analytics tool reduced HR’s need to spend countless hours manually aggregating and consolidating reports from multiple systems. This enabled HR to focus their efforts on interpreting and analyzing the data. By integrating HR, Sales Compensation, and Financial data into one central database, users were able to pivot on multiple dimensions of data in a way that had never been done before. The tool also increased the efficiency and productivity of its HR team by eliminating 135 different reports that are now housed in four master reports. Users could customize these master reports by a number of fields including business segment, geography, HR metric, fiscal date, and more.

Not just a Tool
The vision for creating a Sales analytics environment was never to just create a tool. Rather, the team’s vision was to use the tool as a catalyst for elevating HR thinking within HP. Through the sophisticated way that data could now be viewed across multiple dimensions using this tool, HR has deepened their analytical skills and found new ways to tie human capital decisions to overall business strategies. As a result, business HR has been increasingly recognized within the company for its ability to articulate how HR strategies can result in things like cost savings and improved performance. The creation of the Sales Analytics tool is only the beginning for HP. The company continues to identify how different workforce levers impact the business, which is evolving into end-to-end HR modeling that is helping to move the company forward.

HP's SVP, Human Resources, awarded the TSG Sales HR team with the 2008 HR Excellence Award for the team’s innovative work on the Sales Analytics tool. George Haddad has also been invited by various external organizations to speak on this topic.

PARTNERSHIP WITH HR

Nominees Name:       Dianna Wilusz
Nominees Title:      Senior Consultant
Nominees Company:    Craford Benefits Consultans
Number of Employees: 8
Reasons:            Dianna and her team approach a project understanding the realities of the HR world. Her strong HR leadership experiences combined with her analytical skills is a winning combination resulting in successful and achievable solutions. Dianna exemplifies the Crawford values of integrity, teamwork, respect, commitment and stewardship.

The HR team at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and Stanford Hospital and Clinics went through a process to redesign the HR service delivery model for the joint organizations. We were ready to implement a shared services HR model (HR Business Center) to centralize HR business processes where it made sense in order to leverage even greater efficiencies and consistency in order to optimize customer service results.

This is where Dianna and her incredible team joined us to create a successful and realistic implementation plan. This included guiding us through the implementation process up to our go-live. Dianna quickly gained the respect and commitment from team members and stakeholders. She helped the develop roles and responsibilities for the HR Business Center and assisted us in determining the resource requirements. Dianna consistently demonstrated her commitment to the success of our project. She challenged us to think outside the box with our line of sight to the future goals.

Dianna used a very tactical approach as she helped us take our vision and turn it into reality through a series of phases which included:
1. An HR Process and System implementation prioritization process.
2. Determining which HR processes are best suited to for the HR Business Center.
3. Defining the workforce requirements, roles, and responsibilities for the HR Business Center
4. Creation of the implementation plan for the HR Business Center.

In addition to identifying timelines for infrastructure and people resources, the plan included components related to change management and stakeholder communications.

I can’t image a project not succeeding with Dianna as an HR partner. Having her as a partner is truly rewarding. Not only from a business perspective but as a respected colleague with a great sense of humor.

Special Recognition

Nominees Name:       Bruce Skillings
Nominees Title:      President
Nominees Company:    Bernard Hodes Group
Number of Employees: 300
Reasons:            The Human Resource Symposium would not be in existence today without the support if Bruce Skillings and the commitment of his organization, the Bernard Hodes Group.

Bruce Skillings has been a true innovator in the HR community. For over 35 years, Bruce managed Bernard Hodes Group's Western region and was responsible for the agency's Hong Kong and Singapore offices, and the Southeast Asia affiliate group. He also led the team that developed CareerMosaic, the web's first employment site. During his tenure at Hodes, Bruce has developed successful HR communications campaigns for numerous business-to-business and consumer product accounts. Bruce is now President, Recruitment Communications for Bernard Hodes Group.

Bruce strongly believes in customer service and that you treat people like you want to be treated. In his mind it all comes down to people caring about what your customers do and having that relationship with the customer that goes beyond a transaction.

Bruce has carried this mantra to his staff at Bernard Hodes. Unless they have a relationship with the persons they are doing business with, they can't replace that relationship with a new product or a new technology.

Bruce once told me "I don't want to be known as the best of the best". "I want to be known as the only people who do what we do. Unless you have a relationship, our service can be distilled down to a commodity and commodities can be compared, like, I can buy that pencil for a penny less over there. But if I have a relationship, there's a reason for me to do business with somebody. It comes down to trust, it comes down to understanding the client, it comes down to knowing what the client's needs are. It comes down to asking simple questions like, "How are you? How can we help you?" and, most importantly, saying "thank you."

Bruce's and Bernard Hodes Group commitment, his “thank you”, to the HR community is shown with their pro-bono involvement with many HR organizations including the HR Symposium.

Bruce and his staff at Hodes have played a critical part in the success of the Symposium for the past 25 years. They plan an equally important roles with many other organizations and events.
